62 - Simone Setti (Carpi, 1615–1680)

Simone Setti (Carpi, 1615–1680) Large two-tone scagliola panel in a frame 64x128 cm – framed 108x174 cm At the center, a shaped shield encloses a classical-style figurative scene depicting the goddess Diana in motion, extending her right arm toward a deer chased by a dog and holding a bow in her left hand. All around, a dense decoration of large scrolls of richly jagged and branched acanthus leaves covers the entire surface. In the center, above and below the shield, two large shells stand out—a decorative motif typical of Renaissance and Baroque ornamentation. On either side of the central panel, the decoration is arranged into four medallions formed by intertwined leaves; inside each medallion is a parrot perched on a branch, depicted in various poses. The entire composition is enclosed by a thin perimeter frame imitating marble. The walnut frame features a wide molded band creating cuspated corners, punctuated by bands carved in the shape of a spinning top.
