FOUR 17TH-CENTURY VOLUMES IN 16° AND 24° FORMAT IN FRENCH: 1) Théophile Imarigeon Duvernet (Abbot Duvernet, 1734–1796) *LA VIE DE VOLTAIRE PAR M…*, published in London, 1786. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers. Sprinkled edges. Title in gold within a medallion on the spine. Gold fillets on the spine. Trimmings trimmed. In excellent condition. It is considered one of the earliest and most balanced biographies of Voltaire. It stands out for its tone, free from excessive polemics or flattery, refuting, among other things, the false rumor of Voltaire’s alleged conversion on his deathbed and lucidly outlining his relationships with key figures of the Enlightenment. pp. (4) + 404. 2) LES OEUVRES GALANTES ET AMOUREUSES D'OVIDE, ed. London 1784. A clandestine French-language edition of the erotic and romantic works of the Roman poet Ovid. In 24° format. 2 volumes in 24° format. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers, featuring gold friezes and titles on the endpapers. Colored edges. Well preserved with clean, well-maintained pages. An excellent copy. The book contains French translations of Ovid’s elegiac masterpieces, such as *The Art of Love* (*Ars Amatoria*), *Remedies for Love* (*Remedia Amoris*), *Amores*, and *Heroides*. 214 pp.; 209, (3). 3) POESIES DE M. HELVETIUS. LE BONHEUR, AN ALLEGORICAL POEM IN FOUR CHANTS, NEW EDITION, published in London, 1781. This 1781 edition (apparently printed “in London” but actually produced in Paris by the publisher Cazin / printed by Jacques-François Valade) is a refined collection of the poetic works of the French Enlightenment philosopher Claude-Adrien Helvétius, published posthumously (the author had died in 1771). A famous clandestine edition printed in Paris by Valade on behalf of the well-known publisher Hubert Cazin, published under the false designation “In London” to circumvent French royal censorship. Pp. (4), LVII, 176 pages. The work brings together the Enlightenment philosopher’s poetic output, including the philosophical poem in four cantos *Le Bonheur*, the *Épître sur les Arts*, the *Épître sur le plaisir* addressed to Voltaire, and part of their correspondence.
