THREE 18TH-CENTURY WORKS IN FRENCH: 1) *La Dunciade: Poème en dix chants*, published in London in 1781. A famous satirical poem written by the French author Charles Palissot de Montenoy (1730–1814). It is a highly polemical and satirical work directed primarily against the Encyclopedists and the Enlightenment philosophers of the time. This “Nouvelle édition” is known for having been revised, corrected, and enriched with extensive commentary and explanatory notes compared to previous editions. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers, title bands, and gold lettering on the spine. In excellent condition with clean, well-preserved pages. 199.2 pp. *LA MORALE DE CONFUCIUS PHILOSOPHE DE LA CHINE*, published in London, 1783. A famous 18th-century book, widely printed and distributed in Europe, offering a synthesis of Confucian thought tailored to the Western audience of the time. The title page bears the inscription “A Londres” (London), but this is actually a false place of printing. The book was printed clandestinely in France (either in Paris by the publisher Valade or in Reims by the publisher Cazin). This practice was common in the 18th century to circumvent royal and religious censorship. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers, title bands, and gold friezes on the spine. In excellent condition with clean, well-preserved pages. Engraving depicting Confucius on the frontispiece, signed by Delvaux. Pp. 197.3) POESIES DE M. HELVETIUS. LE BONHEUR, POEME ALLEGORIQUE EN QUATRE CHANTS, ed. A Londres 1781. This 1781 edition (apparently printed “in London” but actually produced in Paris by the publisher Cazin / printed by Jacques-François Valade) is a refined collection of the poetic works of the French Enlightenment philosopher Claude-Adrien Helvétius, published posthumously (the author had died in 1771). A famous clandestine edition printed in Paris by Valade on behalf of the well-known publisher Hubert Cazin, published under the false designation “In London” to circumvent French royal censorship. This copy is complete with the portrait of Helvétius on the frontispiece, engraved on copper by Dupin, and its (4), LVII, 176 pages. The work brings together the Enlightenment philosopher’s poetic output, including the philosophical poem in four cantos *Le Bonheur*, the *Épître sur les Arts*, the *Épître sur le plaisir* addressed to Voltaire, and part of their correspondence.
