440 - THREE 19TH-CENTURY BOOKS OF VARIOUS GENRES: 1) Luigi Alessandro Parravicini, *Giannetto*, published in Milan by Maisner e Comp., 1872. Small 8vo. *Giannetto* is considered the most important Italian children’s book prior to *Pinocchio* and was long regarded as the prototype of the modern school textbook. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers; gold lettering on the spine. This 1872 copy consists of three volumes because the publisher, V. Maisner, chose that year to retain the work’s original historical division (as conceived in 1836), consolidating the five thematic sections into just three printed parts instead of four. Volume in good condition. Pp. XV, 262, (2), 214, 423.2) ELEMENTS OF MODERN GEOGRAPHY FOR SCHOOL USE, ed. Turin, Giacinto Marietti 1846. In 16°. Fifth edition. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers; gold lettering on the spine. Includes a set of 9 original maps, folded several times. Volume in more than fair condition. The original author of the base text (of which the Marietti printing house produced several expanded and revised editions over time) is the geographer Jacques Antoine Bertre (1776–1834), an engineer and captain in the Imperial Corps of French Geographers. 216 pp. 3) Carlo Briot (Charles Auguste Albert Briot) / Ernesto Sergent COURSE IN COSMOGRAPHY OR ELEMENTS OF ASTRONOMY, ed. Milan, Francesco Pagnoni 1860. 1st edition. The text was originally published in France as a textbook for high schools and for preparation for admission to specialized schools, structured to explain the principles of cosmography and celestial mechanics in a clear and rigorous manner. In 16° format. Contemporary half-percallina binding with marbled covers. Gold lettering and fillets on the spine. Volume in excellent condition. 401 pp.
