TWO APOCRYPHAL WORKS BY J. J. ROUSSEAU, IN FRENCH: *La Nouvelle Héloïse, or Letters from Two Lovers Living in a Small Town at the Foot of the Alps*, published in Geneva in 1793. A work in 2 volumes, 24° format. An elegant “pirated” edition from 1793, published in two volumes and including a story not written by Rousseau but by the German scholar Friedrich August Clemens Werthes (originally published in Germany in 1782). In 1793, printers and publishers (such as those in Avignon or the Libraires Associés of Paris/Geneva) took this fictional story, had it translated into French, and arbitrarily appended it to the end of Rousseau’s novel. They passed it off as an “official sequel” to deceive readers of the time and sell more copies of their *Nouvelle édition*. In fact, it is a classic counterfeit or cheap “mass-market” reprint of the era. Fine copies with contemporary half-leather bindings featuring marbled covers and gold titles within medallions on the spines. Gold fillets on the spines. Volumes in more than fair condition. Pp. 294; 265.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
