Benedetto Trionfante Auction House S.r.l.

420 - FOUR 18TH-CENTURY VOLUMES: 1) François-Nicolas Le Maître de Claville (commonly known as M. de Claville), *Treatise on the True Merit of Man*, published in Venice in 1757 by Luigi Pavini. Large 16mo. Later binding from the early 1900s in half-leather with marbled corners and covers. Gold titles and fillets on the spine. The volume is in fairly good condition. The translation and editing of the text were carried out by the Piedmontese abbot and scholar Domenico Granara. pp. XII, 494. 2) Jacques Vergier, *OEUVRES DE VERGIER*, published in London in 1780. A work in 3 volumes in 24° format. Contemporary half-leather bindings with marbled covers and gold titles and decorations on the spines. Volumes in excellent condition. Jacques Vergier (1655–1720) was a poet and magistrate in the French Navy, famous for his gallant and satirical verses. Although the title page states “in London,” this is actually a typographical error—a practice very common at the time to circumvent censorship. The edition is attributed to the famous publisher Hubert-Martin Cazin (printed between Reims and Paris). The frontispiece features a woodcut portrait of the author. Pp. 263, 288, 288.
