FRANCESCO PETRARCA’S “SETTECENTINA”: THE VERSES OF M. FRANCESCO PETRARCA COMPARED WITH THE BEST PRINTED EDITIONS AND WITH A VERY ANCIENT MANUSCRIPT, ed. Padua, Giuseppe Comino, 1721. Small 8vo. Beautiful intaglio printer’s mark on the title page and woodcut coat of arms at the end; wood-engraved initials, running heads, and endmarks. Contemporary binding in full stiff parchment with titles embossed in gold on the spine label and colored edges. A refined edition of Petrarch’s *Canzoniere*: “The clarity of the type, the beauty of the paper, and above all the extraordinary care with which this edition was produced [...] make it distinguished and highly prized among the editions of the *Canzoniere* published in the 18th century” (Marsand 99). This edition was also highly celebrated for its text and was cited by the Accademici della Crusca in their dictionary, “using only this edition in their citations of the ‘Frottola,’” one of the poems “said to have been rejected by him” and included in this work.
