New Spain School. Mexico. 18th century. “St. Francis de Sales, the Doctor of the Love of God.” Oil on copper. 30 x 20.5 cm. Our artist is clearly influenced by the Italian school, particularly by the Bolognese painter Marcantonio Franceschini (Bologna, 1648–1729). The brushwork strongly resembles Franceschini’s style. Active during the Late Baroque period, Franceschini was one of the last great figures of the Bolognese School and exerted considerable influence during his lifetime. The work presented here is a small painting of remarkable quality, masterfully executed in accordance with the principles of Classicism. It is characterized by great purity of form, chromatic vibrancy, and luminous intensity. Unlike other saints traditionally depicted in dark, austere garments, Saint Francis de Sales is portrayed here wearing the liturgical vestments befitting his rank as Bishop of Geneva. He stands in a room lined with turquoise fabric adorned with gold brocade, opening onto a balcony and an open terrace that lend the composition a sense of space and airiness. The abundant light and wealth of detail are further enhanced by a swirling host of child angels holding his written works, lending this copper painting exceptional chromatic richness. The pictorial and iconographic representation of Saint Francis de Sales (1567–1622), Bishop of Geneva, Doctor of the Church, and patron saint of writers and journalists, follows the traditional visual conventions and attributes of sacred art. He is depicted as a mature, bald man, dressed in prelate’s vestments consisting of a mozzetta, cassock, and rochet. He wears a pectoral cross on his chest, symbolizing his consecration to Christ. He “must” also traditionally be wearing his episcopal ring, which is not visible due to the position of his hand; this ring symbolizes his spiritual marriage to the Church. Recognized as a Doctor of the Church and a great spiritual writer—notably the author of *Introduction to the Devout Life*—he is shown writing and holding an open book, attentive to divine inspiration, symbolized by the dove of the Holy Spirit. The presence of the angels, already holding his completed works, further reinforces his identity as a prolific spiritual author. A small painting imbued with devotion and serenity, with a gentle smile in the eyes, it invites the viewer to linger over and absorb every detail. It would be an ideal addition to the collection of a writer seeking the protection and inspiration of this prolific author. A window onto light, it is a work of enduring appeal and great visual charm.
