19th-century French school, after Jean II Restout (1692–1768) The Presentation of the Child in the Temple Oil on canvas 120 x 80 cm. Copy of the 1735 painting, commissioned for the chapel of the Saint-Sulpice Seminary, now in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux (407 x 275 cm, inv. Bx E 38). After the suppression of the Society of Saint-Sulpice in 1792, the painting was confiscated and sent to the Bordeaux Museum in 1805. The fire at City Hall in 1870 severely damaged the left side of the work; despite restoration efforts, the painting’s full clarity could not be restored, which indicates that our copy predates this tragic event.
