Zoomorphic kava bowl, Fiji Islands, Polynesia Wood Approx. 54.5 x 71 x 16.5 cm. The elegant shape of this bowl represents a 19th-century evolution of the famous turtle-shaped vessels known as darivonu, traditionally associated with the consumption of kava (yaqona). It differs from these, however, in that it features a rim and feet. This type of bowl could be used to serve food or, more informally, for drinking kava. A comparable example is held at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge (inv. D 1897.34). A similar four-legged bowl, acquired in Apia in 1895 by Augustin Krämer, is also considered to be of Fijian origin.
