Note: Roman Polanski, director and lead actor of *The Tenant*, plays Trelkovsky, a reserved man who moves into a Parisian apartment whose previous tenant had attempted suicide. Convinced that his neighbors are trying to force the identity of the deceased upon him, he gradually sinks into paranoia. Isabelle Adjani plays Stella, a friend of the former tenant and Trelkovsky’s rare ally in this oppressive world. Adapted from Roland Topor’s novel *Le Locataire chimérique*, this psychological thriller was filmed in 1975–1976 and screened in competition at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. It is Polanski’s first feature film directed in France.
