THE DIRECTOR AND HIS CAMERA Robert Florey, on set, 1920s. Photograph, vintage silver gelatin print on card stock, annotated on the back. 20.4 x 25.4 cm, including white margins. One white margin shows signs of handling. Note: Originally from France, Robert Florey moved to the United States in 1921 to work as a correspondent for film magazines before joining Hollywood studios. The camera plays a central role in his visual explorations, particularly in the experimental short film *The Life and Death of 9413: A Hollywood Extra*, co-directed with Slavko Vorkapich in 1928. Made on a very modest budget, this film uses oblique framing, superimpositions, miniatures, and camera movements to deliver an expressionist satire of the Hollywood industry. Without additional information, the film shoot depicted in this photograph cannot be identified with certainty.
