ROMY SCHNEIDER AND HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT During the filming of the (unfinished) movie *L'Enfer*, 1964. Photo, vintage silver gelatin print, stamped (including dates) and annotated on the back. 20 x 26.5 cm. Note: In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot cast Romy Schneider as Odette, the wife of a pathologically jealous hotelier played by Serge Reggiani. With substantial production resources at his disposal, the director aimed to visually convey the husband’s distorted perception: he experimented extensively with colors, rotating lights, makeup, and optical distortions, which gave Romy Schneider’s face a hypnotic quality. Filming, organized with several crews, was however halted after only three weeks, and the film remained unfinished. The rushes, which had long remained unseen, were finally revealed in the 2009 documentary *L’Enfer d’Henri-Georges Clouzot*, directed by Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea. Traces of Manipulation.
