English School (probably 18th century) King Charles ye firste head Drawn in Opticks... (An Anamorphic Portrait) Etching and engraving, circa 1650-1750, an excellent impression of this very scarce print, on mid-18th century laid paper with watermark of fleur-de-lis surmounting an armorial device with band, lettered 'LVG' below, soft horizontal creasing, marginal nicks and tears, some spotting and surface dirt, platemark 548 x 135 mm (21 x 5 1/4 in), sheet 620 x 170 mm (24 3/8 x 6 3/4 in) (unframed) Provenance: Private collection, Dorset, UK *** Another impression is held in the Royal Collection, where it has been dated circa 1650-1700. The plate was still in use in the early 19th century, with copies known that bear the publisher's imprint and date of R.H. Laurie '1821'. Our impression was likely pulled in the 18th century, but the plate itself could have been produced earlier.
