CHARLES BÉTOUT (1869–1945). French costume designer and head costume artist, internationally renowned for his extremely detailed stage costume sketches created for theater, opera, and film. His costume designs are characterized by rigorous historical accuracy and meticulous attention to detail in the patterns, the use of rich colors—sometimes enhanced with gold or silver leaf to simulate the effect of spotlights on the fabrics—and technical annotations in the margins intended for the sewing workshops to guide the physical construction of the garments. True to his reputation for historical accuracy, Charles Bétout designed the sumptuous Italian Renaissance-era costumes for Abel Gance’s *Lucrece Borgia* in 1935, in collaboration with Louis Granier and with the participation of Gabrielle Chanel. His original designs made it possible to recreate the lavish and decadent atmosphere of the Borgia court. The lead role is masterfully portrayed by Edwige Feuillère, whose career literally took off with this film. She shares the screen with Gabriel Gabrio (Cesare Borgia) and the famous poet and playwright Antonin Artaud, who is impressive in the role of the monk Savonarola. Set of 3 costume designs for Edwige Feuillère in her role as Lucrezia Borgia in Abel Gance’s film. Watercolors with gouache highlights, including 2 signed with annotations. 25 x 32 cm each. The set.
