UDAY SHANKAR and SERGE LIFAR. Set of 4 photographs dated December 1939 at the Globe Theater in Calcutta, India. In one of the photographs, Serge Lifar and Uday Shankar are dancing in front of a group of people. Uday Shankar (December 8, 1900 – September 26, 1977) was a brilliant Indian dancer and choreographer, widely regarded as the father of modern Indian dance. He revolutionized the world of the performing arts by creating a unique fusion style, adapting Western theatrical techniques to the classical, folk, and tribal dances of India. His international tours in the 1920s and 1930s helped popularize the richness of Indian dance in Europe and the United States.
