309 - CHANEL GABRIELLE. COCO CHANEL. Photograph by HORST. Horst P. Horst (1906–1999), a renowned German-American fashion photographer who was close to the designer. After long refusing to pose for *Vogue* magazine, Chanel finally agreed to be photographed by Horst during a private session. Coco Chanel in her suite at the Ritz Hotel in 1937. Coco Chanel is shown sitting or leaning slightly in a Louis XVI-style armchair (inspired by a piece from her own apartment at the Ritz Hotel). She wears a simple outfit paired with her iconic, bold jewelry, her hair is short, and she holds her cigarette in her characteristic manner. The soft lighting reveals a more intimate, serene, and vulnerable side of the great fashion designer, a far cry from her usual image as an unyielding woman of power. Since Horst refused to charge her for the print, Chanel offered him several pieces of furniture from her own personal collection in return. This portrait remained Chanel’s favorite image for many years. Period gelatin-silver print on pearlescent paper, 1937. Annotated on the back and numbered. A sublime photograph of Coco Chanel reclining in a draped duchesse gown, more elegant than ever. This image captures the prestige not only of the woman herself but also of the Chanel brand. 23 x 17.5 cm....
