THERESE LE PRAT. Thérèse Le Prat (born Thérèse Cahen on March 19, 1895, in Pantin; died March 6, 1966, in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a leading French photographer of the 20th century. Initially known for her travel photography, she became a leading figure in theatrical and artistic portraiture after World War II. After the war, she opened her own studio in Paris and specialized in portraits of celebrities. She captured the greatest actors and dancers of her era (Maria Casarès, Gérard Philipe, Jean-Louis Barrault). Far from seeking the standard celebrity cliché, she sought to capture the metamorphosis of expressions brought about by makeup, costumes, and contrasts in light. Her work explores human psychology and the gravity of existence through the lens of acting. Analog photograph by André Michel, 1947, 19 x 29 cm.
