145 - UTILLO, Maurice (1883–1955). Original print or lithograph by the French painter Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955), famous for his cityscapes depicting the Montmartre district of Paris. The print is titled “Montmartre, Place du Tertre, and Sacré-Cœur.” The view depicts the famous Place du Tertre in the foreground. To the right stands the Church of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, while the dome of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica dominates the background. It bears the artist’s characteristic signature printed on the plate in the lower right corner: Maurice, Utrillo, V. The “V” refers to his mother’s maiden name, the painter Suzanne Valadon. The handwritten pencil inscription “1/39” in the lower left corner indicates that this is the very first print in a limited edition of only 39 copies. This original lithograph by Maurice Utrillo was created in 1924 (some prints from the same series were completed and sold as late as 1925). 40 x 26 cm.
