Edith PIAF. Greeting card sent from New York on January 11, 1950, to Jean Jeepy, with a beautiful signature by Edith Piaf. The envelope, postmarked in New York, bears the notation “New York, N.Y., Grand Central” with the date January 11, 1950, at 12:00 p.m. In January 1950, Edith Piaf continued her conquest of the United States by performing on stage at the famous New York cabaret “Le Versailles,” where her triumphant singing performances left a lasting impression on American audiences. This early 1950 performance came a few months after the tragic death of Marcel Cerdan (in October 1949), a tragedy that deeply haunted “La Môme’s” private life during her stay in the United States, while also cementing the legacy of her “Hymne à l’Amour,” which was performed for the first time in New York.
