A Japanese print (ukiyo-e in the sensō-e style) dating from November 1895, created by the artist Mizuno Toshikata. It depicts a pivotal moment in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895). The work depicts the surrender of Chinese officers from the Beiyang Fleet following their crushing defeat at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Battle of Weihaiwei. True to the propaganda conventions of the Meiji era, the print emphasizes the contrast between the two sides. The Japanese officers are depicted standing upright and dignified in modern, Western-style uniforms, while the representatives of the Qing Dynasty are shown kneeling or bowing in a posture of submission.
