A humorous Japanese woodblock print in the Toba-e (鳥羽絵) style by the artist Hasegawa Mitsunobu (長谷川光信), who was active in the 18th century during the Edo period. Toba-e is characterized by caricatures of expressive figures with exaggeratedly long, spindly limbs. This artistic style is now considered one of the direct precursors of modern manga. The scene depicts a traveling puppet showman (ningyō-mawashi or ebisu-mawashi) carrying his performance box around his waist, accompanied by a young boy or an assistant. A pencil signature reading “Mitsunobu” is visible in the lower margin of the mat.
