TOYOKUNI III (1786–1864). Double-page spread from a book of Japanese prints in the Toba-e style. Edo period. The pages combine depictions of traditional figures in period costumes (kimonos with intricate patterns, traditional hairstyles) with abundant poetic or narrative inscriptions written in Japanese cursive calligraphy (kuzushiji). Figure on the left: This depicts a kabuki actor or a warrior with an expressive, grimacing face, dressed in a garment adorned with geometric and floral motifs, holding a frame or mirror displaying another scene. Figures on the right: Here we see an elegant female figure (often associated with the bijin-ga style of depicting beauties) accompanied by a young child on her back, as well as a small, moving figure in the foreground.
