A rare low-seated bergère with a wraparound backrest, made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, featuring a marquetry decoration of rosettes, quatrefoils, and stylized palmettes in ebony and pewter. The backrest is flanked by ram’s heads, and the armrests rest on three lotus-shaped legs finely carved with palmettes and volutes. Attributed to François-Honoré-Georges and Georges Jacob (1803–1813). Consulate/Empire period. 94 × 66 × 60 cm. (Minor repairs; cushion missing) This rare bergère model combines decorative elements associated with the Consulate style—such as the ram’s heads— as illustrated by a bergère in the collection of the Mobilier National, created based on drawings by Le Queu for the furnishings of the Hôtel de Montholon, as well as elements associated with the Empire style, such as the lotus-shaped legs and the chair’s particularly massive and architecturally designed structure. The use of pewter and ebony against a mahogany background recalls the work of certain cabinetmakers during the Consulate and the Empire, such as Pierre-Etienne Levasseur or the Jacob brothers. Notable examples include the famous furniture preserved at the Fondation Napoléon (a drop-leaf secretary and a matching chest of drawers with doors) crafted by Pierre-Etienne Levasseur.
