Jean Baptiste LALLEMAND (1716–1803), detail from “Shepherd and His Flock Among Ancient Ruins” Ink and wash H_30.5 cm W_26 cm (Freckles) This drawing is reminiscent of Jean Baptiste Lallemand’s work in Italy. A French painter, Lallemand lived in Rome between 1747 and 1761. There, under the influence of the great Italian landscape painters—notably Giovanni Paolo Panini and Giovanni Battista Piranesi—he developed a strong affinity for the ruins of antiquity. Our drawing also bears a resemblance to the compositions of the latter.
