TASSO (Torquato) — *Di Gerusalemme conquistata*. 24 books. Paris, Abel L'Angelier, 1595. Small 12mo, original soft vellum binding. A rare Parisian edition of *Gerusalemme conquistata*, Torquato Tasso’s reworking of his *Gerusalemme liberata*. This edition has particularly flawed pagination, with the printed page numbers containing numerous repetitions and anomalies. This copy preserves, in Book XX, f. 270, the stanzas referring to France that led to the edition’s condemnation by the Parliament of Paris in September 1595. The work continues through Book XXIV, the final book, whose closing phrase, “Il fine del Vigesimo quarto, & ultimo Libro,” is present, followed by a large typographical ornament. There are interesting old handwritten annotations in Italian on the introductory leaves, likely from the 19th century, forming a scholarly note devoted in particular to French epic traditions, Narbonne, the Carolingians, and the Capetians. The binding is heavily worn with damage and imperfections; there is water damage and soiling, particularly toward the end of the volume; and a few old annotations. The interior remains generally legible and well-preserved considering its age. This copy has not been collated and is sold as is.
