Horst Janssen, gentleman with hat, etching in narrow upright format, Hamburg draughtsman, 1992 (1929 Hamburg – 1995 ibid.), etching/paper, mounted on a support, numbered 61/100 in pencil lower right, monogrammed and dated 92. Narrow upright format: in the upper part of the image a figure in a dark suit with white collar and pale headwear, below it, turned towards the edge, a second body left light with a grasping hand; the forms are set in strong dark areas against lightened passages. Printed in brown and olive green on toned paper. Good condition, lower sheet edge minimally stained and creased. Image 49.5 x 20.5 cm (HxW), mount, behind glass, framed, overall 86 x 52.5 cm (HxW). Janssen's sheets of the early 1990s were produced in dense succession and mostly printed in editions of 100, each signed and numbered in pencil. He worked predominantly in drypoint and etching, frequently with coloured inking of the plate, which gives every sheet its own tone. His work is represented in numerous museums; the Horst Janssen Museum in Oldenburg, opened in 2000, preserves and displays his graphic estate.
