Otto Eglau, Morgenwatt, etching of a tidal flat landscape by the Sylt printmaker, 1983 (1917 Berlin – 1988 Kampen on Sylt), etching/paper, signed and dated 83 lower right, titled 'Morgenwatt' lower centre, numbered 111/350 lower left. Tidal flat landscape built up in horizontal zones: above a pale, granular etched sky zone lies a narrow dark band with a suggested tidal channel, below which sand and water surfaces are tiered in brown and black. Age-appropriate good condition, minimally stained. Image 8 x 9 cm (HxW), mount, behind glass, framed, frame scratched, overall 34.5 x 34.5 cm (HxW). After war service and captivity Otto Eglau studied at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin under Oskar Nerlinger, Max Kaus and Wolf Hoffmann; in 1953 he became a lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin and from 1969 to 1976 taught as professor of etching at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg. From 1950 he returned again and again to Kampen on Sylt, acquiring a house there in 1976 and setting it up as a gallery and studio; from then on he found his motifs almost exclusively on the North Sea coast. In 1957 he received a prize at the first International Print Biennale in Tokyo, in 1981 the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
