Gregory Masurovsky, Plume à la mer, signed etching on BFK Rives, 1962 Etching on BFK Rives paper, signed 'Gregory Masurovsky' and dated 1962 lower right, titled lower centre, numbered 3/50 lower left. On the wide white sheet stands a single upright rectangular form composed of countless fine curved strokes which opens at the top into a dense, swirling knot; towards the bottom it dissolves into single threads spreading out above a horizontal line. The pictorial space otherwise remains empty, so that the form floats freely in the sheet. Age-appropriate good condition, slightly creased, margin minimally torn. Image 43 x 27 cm (HxW), overall size 65.5 x 50 cm (HxW) Gregory Masurovsky, born in New York in 1929 and died in Paris in 2009, went to Paris in 1953 and remained there. He worked almost exclusively with pen and etching needle and built up his pictures from dense bundles of the finest strokes out of which organic-looking formations condense. His work thus runs counter to the gestural painting of his time and seeks its effect in the small scale. BFK Rives is a French mould-made paper from the house of Arjomari, valued for intaglio printmaking because of its soft surface and smooth grain.
