Erich Mädler, portfolio "Das Exlibris", ten bookplates, introduction by Geo Becker, Rar-Verlag 1923 (1891 Dresden – 1966 Wehlen), etching on paper, each signed, 1923, numbered copy 5/10, portfolio of ten bookplates, edited and with introductory text by Geo Becker, Berlin/Dresden 1923, title page inscribed "Das Exlibris", "Erich Maedler", "Zehn Exlibris Radierungen" and "Rar-Verlag", the sheets printed partly in brown, partly in blue-grey, each mounted on brown cardboard, very good condition commensurate with age, title and introduction sheets slightly foxed, portfolio with signs of use, image approx. 11.5x6.5 cm (HxW), overall 33x24.5 cm (HxW). Erich Mädler (1891 to 1966) was a German graphic artist and museum director from Dresden. The ex libris, Latin for "from the books", is a book owner's mark bearing the name of the owner. The first printed bookplates were made at the end of the 15th century as woodcuts, among them the sheet of Hilprand Brandenburg von Biberach. From about 1880 the bookplate experienced a new upswing, among others through Max Klinger, and in 1891 the Exlibris-Verein zu Berlin was founded. Bookplates are counted among small-format prints.
