Each signed and inscribed in the stone, age-appropriate condition, partly heavily browned, partly rubbed. Image max. 13.5x12.5 cm (HxW), sheet max. 21.5x17 cm (HxW). The Vierlande are four villages in the Elbe marshes south-east of Hamburg whose market gardens have always supplied the Hamburg markets; the orchard marsh west of the city is called Altes Land. The Vierlande costume, which developed between 1750 and 1770, was more than clothing there: on the Hamburg markets it served as a mark of origin and quality for vegetables and fruit from the Elbe marshes, was worn from Easter to Michaelmas and disappeared from everyday life after 1915. Characteristic are the flat straw hat with low crown over the black bonnet, the jacket richly set with silver buttons and the filigree breast ornament; for the men the top hat replaced the broad hat around 1830. Friedrich Carl Alexander Lill, 1807 Frankfurt am Main to 1879 Frankfurt am Main, was a painter, lithographer and steel engraver, worked in Hamburg at the Suhr lithographic institute and published Hamburg views and costume prints himself. H. Jessen is documented as a Hamburg lithographer around 1840 to 1850 and drew the Hamburg costume series published by B. S. Berendsohn.
