Berlin and Hamburg views, Thomas Heawood "Hamburger Bahnhof", street scene at a hotel, 19th century Two views, steel engraving/paper. 1) Thomas Heawood, inscribed lower right "T. HEAWOOD", draughtsman's name lower left, titled below the image "Hamburg Railway Terminus" and "Hamburger Bahnhof", circa 1850, late neoclassical station building with two clock towers and an arcaded storey above round-arched passages, in front a row of trees, strollers and riders, on the right a steam locomotive with carriages on the track, good condition commensurate with age, slightly stained, image 11x16.5 cm (HxW), passe-partout, glazed, framed, frame chipped, overall 25.5x29.5 cm (HxW). 2) uninscribed, coloured, 19th century, street scene with a gabled house and stair tower, on the house a sign with the hotel name, in front a carriage with a white horse and passers-by, on the left a bridge with balustrade and street lamp, in the centre a light-coloured corner house with awning, behind it a lane with gabled houses, within an engraved scrolling foliage border, good condition commensurate with age, slightly stained, image 11x16.5 cm (HxW), glazed, framed, frame chipped, overall 26.5x33.5 cm (HxW) Thomas Heawood (circa 1810 to circa 1870) was an English copper and steel engraver who worked, among others, after designs by Albert Henry Payne. Payne (1812 London to 1902 Leipzig) worked in Leipzig from 1838 as a steel engraver, painter and illustrator and founded the Englische Kunstanstalt there, where illustrated works such as "Payne's Orbis Pictus" of 1851 were published. The sign on the second view names the Hotel Kaisershof on the Neß in Hamburg's old town; the city bought the house, built in 1619, in 1726 as an inn for distinguished guests, and after its sale in 1871 the building disappeared from the townscape. Its gable front was re-erected in the inner courtyard of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.
