Faithorn, from Augustus Charles Pugin's book of views "Paris and its Environs", circa 1830, street perspective of the Rue Castiglione with multi-storey rows of houses and arcades on both sides, in the background the Vendôme Column with flag, on the left a column of soldiers, in the centre a carriage and passers-by, good condition commensurate with age, browned at the margins, image 10.5x14 cm (HxW), passe-partout, glazed, framed, frame chipped, overall 34x38.5 cm (HxW) The sheet belongs to "Paris and its Environs", the two-volume book of views with 200 steel engravings published by the London publisher Robert Jennings, later Jennings and Chaplin, from 1829 to 1831; the drawings were made under the direction of the French-born architectural draughtsman Augustus Charles Pugin (1762 to 1832 London), the engravings under the supervision of Charles Heath, and the accompanying text was written by L. The Rue de Castiglione was laid out in 1801 and named after the victory at Castiglione in 1796; with its arcades it leads from the Tuileries terrace to the Place Vendôme. The Vendôme Column was erected there from 1806 to 1810, modelled on Trajan's Column, from the bronze of captured cannon to commemorate the victory of Austerlitz; after the return of the Bourbons the statue of Napoleon on its top was removed and replaced by the white flag, as shown in the view.
