Marquis by Waterford, two tall bud vases of the "Samba" series, amber glass on solid clear foot Amber and clear glass, two tall vases, Marquis by Waterford, "Samba" series, unmarked, each with long cylindrical neck above a globular knop on a solid conical foot of clear glass into which the amber body extends in drop shape, 1) the taller vase with two knops one above the other, the lower one broader and flattened, good condition commensurate with age, H. 43 cm, 2) the smaller vase with one flattened knop, good condition commensurate with age, H. 30 cm. The Waterford glass manufactory was founded in 1783 by the brothers George and William Penrose in the Irish port of the same name. After the Second World War the Czechoslovak-born glassmaker Karel Bacik rebuilt the company in 1947 as Waterford Glass, and Miroslav Havel became its first chief designer. In 1991 the company introduced Marquis by Waterford, the first new brand in its history, an independent line with lighter, simpler forms. The coloured Marquis designs include the "Samba" series, whose slender bud vases on a solid clear glass foot were made in amber, blue, red and smoky blue.
