Murano glass sculpture "Homage an Picasso", stylised head with coloured strands of hair, solid glass Coloured glass, solid, Murano glass figure "Homage an Picasso", incised underneath "Homage an Picasso" and "murano itali" and "19-2", stylised head in profile, face of amber-orange glass with pointed projecting nose, applied black eyebrow, eye with white eyeball and blue pupil in black outline, applied red lips, on the head a long curving red flame, at the side six curving drawn-out strands of hair in dark blue, orange, light blue, yellow-green, green and blue with partly clear tips, neck of dark red-brown glass, base of clear glass with dark red-brown inclusions, good condition, H. 43 cm. Stylised glass heads as a homage to Picasso have been a distinct motif of Murano glass art since the second half of the 20th century. It was made known by the series "Omaggio a Picasso" by the glass master Walter Furlan (1931 to 2018), who translated Picasso's portraits of women into stylised heads of solid glass; the Murano master Mario Badioli also created such Picasso heads. The pieces are made in the massello technique, in which the glass is not blown but modelled hot as a solid gather; eyes, lips and the coloured strands of hair are applied hot and drawn out. To this day various workshops on the glass island of Murano make such stylised faces as glass sculptures or glass figures in heights between about 27 and 55 cm.
