1114 - Small glass vase, probably Bohemia, yellow glass with applied glass granules, signed and inscribed

Small glass vase, probably Bohemia, yellow glass with applied glass granules, signed and inscribed Yellow clear glass, small glass vase, probably Bohemia, indistinctly signed underneath and inscribed "3/21", drop shape, broad rounded body, tapering conically towards the top, fine air bubbles in the glass, lower part down to the base densely covered with fused clear glass granules, the surface there rough and granular, good condition commensurate with age, scratches in places, H. 16.5 cm. Glass granules (Krösel) are small pieces of glass produced by crushing coloured glass and used in various grain sizes, transparent or opaque. In glassmaking the hot gather is rolled in the granules so that they fuse to the surface and produce a granular, light-refracting texture. With the centres of Nový Bor, Kamenický Šenov and Železný Brod, Bohemia is one of the most important glass regions of Europe; the glass school in Kamenický Šenov has existed since 1856, and alongside the 19th century the 1950s and 1960s are regarded as one of the most successful periods of Bohemian glass art.
