Erik Strömberg Glass Vase with Engraved Fish Decoration, Sweden, Signed Colourless crystal glass, cut and engraved. Vase of flat oval section with vertical walls flaring slightly towards the top, a thick base and a flat ground mouth. One broad side carries an engraved fish decoration: two stylised angelfish with high dorsal and anal fins, long ventral filaments and cross-hatched internal drawing, together with narrow water plant leaves; the engraving set matt against the clear polished glass. Signed in the base with the diamond point Strömberg, followed by the model designation B with a number. Good condition. 16.5x11x5 cm (HxWxD) The Swedish glassworks Strömbergshyttan in Småland was taken over by Edward Strömberg in 1933 and continued until 1979; his son Erik Strömberg ran the works from 1945, and after his death in 1960 his wife Asta. Characteristic is a heavy, clearly cut crystal which in the 1950s and 1960s became the epitome of Swedish glass. The model designation in the base follows a fixed system: the letter stands for the category, B for blomglas, that is flower glass, the numerals for the model. Engraved fish with water plants are among the recurring motifs of the house and are found from the designs of Gerda Strömberg of the 1930s and 1940s through to the work of Asta Strömberg and Gunnar Nylund around 1960.
