Fritz Heckert, vase with Jodhpur decor, Petersdorf, orientalising enamel painting, circa 1900 Colourless glass, vase, Fritz Heckert, Petersdorf, Jodhpur decor, gold-coloured mark "H" in the base, globular body with long, vertically cut neck and flared mouth with gold-coloured rim, polychrome enamel painting with gold-coloured outlines, on the neck a blue frieze with silver-coloured floral tendril, on the shoulder a blue band with light flowers, below blue arched fields with silver-coloured flowering plants and drop-shaped motifs, between them white and reddish-brown spandrels with gold-coloured flowers, in the lower part gold-coloured flowering plants on a yellow-green ground alternating with green enamelled leaf cartouches, at the foot a blue frieze with floral tendril, good condition commensurate with age, base and mouth rubbed, H. 23 cm. 360-degree photo available on our website. Fritz Heckert was born in Halle an der Saale in 1837 and died in Munich in 1887; in 1866 he founded a glass decorating workshop in Petersdorf in Silesia which produced ornamental glass in the Historicist and Art Nouveau styles with enamel painting, transfer-printed decoration and iridescent surfaces. Besides orientalising patterns, the firm became known for its Cyprus glass, which imitated the patina of ancient glass. The Jodhpur decor was created circa 1900 at the suggestion of Professor Franz Reuleaux, modelled on Indian metalwork; coloured glass fluxes, transparent and opaque enamel with gold and silver outlines produce the closely harmonised colour effect. After the founder's death, his widow and later his son Bruno continued the business, which was eventually absorbed into Josephinenhütte AG. The pieces sometimes bear the mark "F.H." with numbers or letters.
