Table candlestick, 925 silver, crescent and crown, rocaille baluster stem, Baroque style, weighted 925 silver, single-light table candlestick, also candle holder, hallmarked on the foot with crescent and crown, "925", "STERLING" and maker's mark, four-sided shaped, domed foot with relief rocaille and leaf decoration on four volute feet, ribbed baluster stem with rocaille collar and bossed knop, vase-shaped ribbed socket with shaped drip pan, condition commensurate with age, signs of age, slightly bent, base weighted, H. 23 cm. Crescent and crown are the German fineness mark under the Imperial Act on the Fineness of Gold and Silver Wares of 1884, which came into force in 1888: the crown stands for the German Empire, the crescent for silver, and the accompanying number gives the fineness in thousandths, which must be at least 800. Weighted silver candlesticks, marked "weighted sterling" in English-speaking countries, have a foot weighted with wax, plaster or metal that gives the candlestick stability; besides candlesticks, bowls, casters and cups are also made in this way, and the silver content is considerably below the total weight.
