Sugar box, 833 silver, jeweller Casa Castro São Paulo, lidded box with rocailles and flower finial 833 silver, lidded box, also sugar box, Brazil, 20th century, with the mark of the jewellery house Casa Castro, São Paulo, gilt interior. Stamped to the base "PRATA", maker's mark shield with "G", "833" and "CASA CASTRO". Compressed bulbous body on four curved feet, which merge into four vertical, plain bands raised from the wall, between them four chased cartouches of rocailles and C-scrolls with crowning palmette, the central field plain, on the shoulder an encircling chased ornamental frieze, fitted domed lid with four ribs and chased rocaille cartouches, as finial a sculptural flower with bud and leaves. Good condition. D. 11.5 cm, H. 15 cm, weight 458 g. 360-degree photo available on our website. Casa Castro was founded on 22 January 1922 in São Paulo by the Portuguese-born Antonio Teixeira de Castro and is still run by the family as a jewellery house in the fourth generation. As early as the 1920s, silver boxes with engraved monograms were among the firm's products. There was no state assay in Brazil, which is why Brazilian silver bears only the standard mark "PRATA 833" and the mark of the maker or the retailer.
