Three cigarette holders, 835 silver, guilloché sleeves, black Bakelite mouthpieces, Art Deco 835 silver and Bakelite, three cigarette holders, each hallmarked "835" on the sleeve rim, guilloché silver sleeve with black Bakelite mouthpiece. 1) Club-shaped sleeve rounded at the top with fine transverse ribbing, slightly curved mouthpiece flattened at the end. 2) Slender sleeve with lozenge guilloché in the central field and longitudinal ribbing in the side fields, top finished with three rings, thin straight mouthpiece with spherical end. 3) Drop-shaped flattened sleeve with fields of guilloché wavy lines, curved mouthpiece flattened at the end. Springs for ejecting the cigarettes present. Good condition commensurate with age, L. 8.5 cm (longest piece). The cigarette holder is a sleeve between cigarette and mouth that protects clothing and fingers from ash and nicotine; such sleeves came into fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, and models for men were shorter than the long ladies' holders. The fineness mark 835 stands for silver of 835 parts per thousand and, alongside 800, has been the standard for silverware in Germany since the fineness law of 1884. Guilloché consists of fine ornamental line patterns of interwoven lines engraved into the metal on guilloché machines; the technique was used above all for jewellery, watches and silver utensils. Bakelite, the phenolic resin patented by Leo Baekeland in 1907, was the first fully synthetic, industrially produced plastic.
