The name of the Hildesheimer Rose pattern refers to the rose bush at the apse of Hildesheim Cathedral of St. Mary, whose legend goes back to the founding of the diocese circa 815 under Louis the Pious. When the cathedral was destroyed in March 1945, the dog rose also burned, but eight weeks later 25 new shoots sprang from the buried roots. Typical of cutlery with Hildesheimer Rose are detailed rose blossoms, leaves and curved forms; besides coffee spoons and cake servers, this pattern was used above all for small serving pieces such as sugar spoons, cream spoons and cake forks, made in standards from 800 to 925. Crescent and imperial crown mark German silverware under the Act on the Standard of Gold and Silver Wares of 16 July 1884, which came into force on 1 January 1888 and prescribed at least 800/1000 for silver.
