Pierced work with rocailles and flower garlands belongs to the repertoire of Historicism, which took up Baroque and Rococo anew. The rocaille is the typical ornament of the 18th century, a shellwork of C- and S-shaped curved motifs ending in volutes. A centre of silverwork in historical styles was Hanau, whose firms specialised in it in the 2nd half of the 19th century and counted putti, birds and pierced work among their typical decorations. Pierced silver baskets of this kind, also called centrepieces or jardinières, usually received a glass liner of clear or coloured glass that held water, flowers or confectionery.
