Bruckmann & Söhne shooting cup, 800 silver, Federal Shooting Festival Neuchâtel 1898, eagle 800 silver, shooting cup, also goblet, Bruckmann & Söhne, Heilbronn, shooting prize from the Federal Shooting Festival in Neuchâtel 1898, gilt interior, hallmarked with crescent and crown, "800" and the maker's mark of Bruckmann & Söhne. Bell-shaped bowl with embossed and chased relief of the Neuchâtel coat of arms, an eagle with spread wings and on its breast the shield with pale and three chevrons, opposite the engraved inscription "XXXVIe TIR FEDERAL", "NEUCHATEL", "1898" and "Concours de Sections", above it the later engraving "BECHERSTICH 1960"; stem with leaf-wreath knop, trumpet foot with raised leaf tongues and laurel frieze on stepped base plate. The silverware factory Bruckmann & Söhne was founded in Heilbronn in 1805 by Georg Peter Bruckmann and continued by his sons and grandsons; in 1898 it moved into a new works in Lerchenstraße, which was regarded as the largest silverware manufactory in Germany. The firm produced hollowware and cutlery and marked its silver with an eagle with spread wings; in 1968 the business was sold and in 1973 it closed. The Federal Shooting Festival, in French Tir fédéral, has been held since 1824, when the Swiss Shooting Association was founded in Aarau, and today takes place every five years. In 1898 Neuchâtel on Lake Neuchâtel was the venue; besides shooting thalers and commemorative medals, silver cups and goblets were among the shooting prizes awarded to successful marksmen and sections. Heraldically, the Neuchâtel coat of arms is a black eagle on gold with a gold inescutcheon bearing a red pale with three silver chevrons. In Swiss shooting sport, a Stich is a competition programme of usually five to fifteen shots.
