Handled bowl, 13 lot silver, vine leaf and grape rim, branch-work handle, gilt inside, 19th century 13 lot silver, gilt inside, handled bowl, also handled basket, 19th century. Hallmarked "13" on the outside of the foot ring, further marks on the foot ring, illegible. Oval bowl with gadrooned wall on oval foot ring, rim as an encircling, relief-like and pierced wreath of vine leaves, grapes and tendrils, braided, movable swing handle of two intertwined strands in branch-work form with bark texture, attached on both sides by joints on spherical knops. Very good condition commensurate with age. 8x28x22 cm (HxWxD), weight 409 g. The mark "13" indicates the fineness in lot: before the introduction of millesimal marks the fineness of silver was given in lot, with 16 lot corresponding to fine silver and 13 lot to a fineness of 812.5 thousandths. In Germany the Act on the Fineness of Gold and Silver Wares of 16 July 1884, in force from 1 January 1888, regulated marking in thousandths, whereby lot and carat marks became inadmissible. Handled bowls and handled baskets with a relief vine leaf and grape rim were part of table silver in the Biedermeier and Historicism periods. Filled with grapes, such a grape bowl served as a table centrepiece; the form was also used as a fruit bowl and as a sweetmeat dish for confectionery.
