Constantin Brâncuși (1876 Hobița to 1957 Paris) shaped abstract sculpture of the 20th century with egg-shaped heads and stylised birds in wood, marble and bronze; spherical head, long neck and curved volume are the basic forms of this simplification. His direct carving of the material (taille directe) and his geometric reduction had an influence reaching as far as Giacometti and the Minimalists. In this abstract wood sculpture the porous stone base sets the smooth wooden figure off against a rough standing surface.
