Wall telephone, wall phone with writing desk, transmitter arm and two ringer bells, wooden case Wall telephone on an upright rectangular backboard of walnut-colored lacquered wood with shaped, cut-out outline. At the top, a movable transmitter arm with spring joint and funnel-shaped mouthpiece mounted on a round wooden base, below it two hemispherical ringer bells with clapper. Lower half formed as a projecting desk-shaped box with slanted hinged lid and two note holder strips, on the side a hook with suspended receiver with turned wooden handle. To the front a metal plate with handwritten inscription "Stör-Meldeeinrichtg.", stamped to the base "WG" as a monogram, "114478" and "Sp 04". Condition commensurate with age, wood with scratches and chips, fine drying crack to the front, metal parts with spotted patina, plate insert browned, magneto crank missing, housing cannot be opened. 47x28x20 cm (HxWxD). Wall telephones with a hand-cranked magneto worked in local battery operation, OB for short, in which a separate battery in the immediate vicinity of the set supplied the microphone with power. The hand-cranked magneto is a manually operated generator producing an alternating voltage of 30 to 100 V at 15 to 25 Hz. This ringing voltage causes an indicator to appear or the bell to ring at the other end, a switchboard or another telephone set. On the railways, intercom systems in local battery operation connected the signal towers and supervisory districts of a station, in Gerstungen for example from 1900 to 1970. As block inductors, hand-cranked magnetos are still in service in mechanical signal towers today.
