The church in grey masonry with a red-brown pitched roof, the tower with two clock faces, a pointed spire and a weather vane, on the left a polygonal annexe with a round-arched door, the windows of nave and annexe warmly lit, the sky in orange and yellow. Good condition. Image 55.5x69 cm (HxW). Framed, frame scuffed, frame width 9.5 cm The town church of St John is the only church in the place and is dedicated to John the Baptist. The originally Romanesque building was remodelled in the late Gothic style in the 15th c.; in 1823 the tower masonry was raised and the tower received a new, higher roof with a weather vane. The furnishings include an altarpiece from the school of Lucas Cranach, an old baptismal bowl and an organ of 1882. The churchyard served as a burial ground until 1831, after which the cemetery was laid out beyond it. Dietrich Genau, at home in Hoym since childhood, compiled the history of the town as its chronicler and recorded it in several hundred pictures.
