1019 - Dietrich Genau, Evening Landscape after Caspar David Friedrich, Romantic Woodland Mood, 1989

Dietrich Genau, Evening Landscape after Caspar David Friedrich, Romantic Woodland Mood, 1989 (1936 Osnabrueck to 2026), oil on canvas, signed and dated (19)89 lower right. Evening landscape after Caspar David Friedrich: an old, largely bare tree with a gnarled trunk runs from the centre of the picture out to the right, on the left dark spruces, above the path the low sun as a bright disc in a sky glowing from yellow to green; in the foreground the ground with yellow-green grass and a pale path, at the right rear a stand of spruces. Condition commensurate with age, craquelure. Image 40x49.5 cm (HxW). Framed, frame slightly scuffed, frame width 7.5 cm Caspar David Friedrich (1774 to 1840) is regarded as the foremost painter of German Romanticism; the solitary, weather-beaten tree against an evening sky belongs to the established pictorial vocabulary of his followers. Dietrich Genau worked as a carpenter until 1992 and alongside that with pencil, watercolour, oil and pen; he became known as the local chronicler of Hoym and as a regional painter of the Salzlandkreis, which awarded him its cultural prize in 2020. For the Salzland cultural stamp he drew all forty stamp stations of the district.
