Dietrich Genau, Schmiedegasse in Hoym at Night, Half-Timbered Houses in Moonlight, 2002 (1936 Osnabrueck to 2026), oil on canvas, signed and dated 2002 lower right, titled, inscribed and dated Hoym in January 2002 on the reverse. Night view of the Schmiedegasse in Hoym; on the left a half-timbered house with a steep tiled roof, on the right the parsonage as a tall rendered building with several warmly lit windows, in front of it a fence and shrubs; between the houses the lane leads towards a wall and further buildings, the sky clouded in violet-blue, the moon in a golden-yellow break in the clouds. Good condition, crack in the paint layer in the roof of the left-hand house. Image 35x40.5 cm (HxW). Framed, frame overpainted and scuffed, frame width 7.5 cm The Schmiedegasse lies south-west of the churchyard in the oldest part of Hoym; a half-timbered building has survived there at Schmiedegasse 2. The historic centre is listed with 74 entries in the monument register of Saxony-Anhalt, among them numerous half-timbered houses on the market square and in Mittelstrasse, Kirchgasse and Unterstrasse. Dietrich Genau came to Hoym as a child during the Second World War and later documented the town as its chronicler and painter; in 2020 he received the cultural prize of the Salzlandkreis, and in 2024 the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt showed an exhibition of his works.
